RAW MATERIAL OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: INFORMATION

Millennium has brought information society on itself, which during the past 15 years has totally changed the world and the thinking of people. Breakthrough developments of information and communication technologies, producing, distributing and applying information have become the most important raw material of economy and society by now. That expresses sustainable development the most and assigns the path of mankind in the 21st century. Information society does not only mean information becoming dominant as an economic branch, but also information building into daily life of persons, organizations and institutions.
To be continued below the gallery.

Individuals do not have a choice but to join the process and become part of information society. That task makes mankind face a serious challenge due to which communication interaction becomes tighter, while modernization/social innovation more dominant.

Visions in connection with information society usually count on the growing capability of economy, the realisation of democratic pattern and the improvement of quality of life. That process has been helped by globalization which had successfully coped with length and cultural differences. The process can best be examined in megapolises and based on my experiences so far there is no significant difference between the hunger for information and the steps made towards satisfying the need by the inhabitants. Raw material of megapolis societies is information, where the subject of technologies is processing information, so that new technologies do have impact on all individual and collective forms of human activities.

I chose those two cities, London and Beijing, because they are far enough from each other geographically as well as culturally to help modelling the global information society properly. My long term aim is by all means to examine more and more cities by the point of forming and developing information society so as to be able to map reactions given to changes by certain cultures and possibilities of individuals to which extent they are able to contribute to sustainable development. The means of photography are not always enough to shadow the picture, that is why moving picture documentation will also be needed which ensures further possibilities of examining information society and sustainable development. I want to examine how societies of the Earth struck by famine, war or other natural disasters try to accommodate to negative conditions and how they try to become part of the information flow. According to my opinion presently that is the greatest challenge of mankind!
